The Vancouver Writers Festival is a non-profit organization that produces a variety of literary events in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Its main event is the Vancouver Writers Fest, which is an annual week-long literary festival held on Granville Island, Vancouver in mid October. Writers from Canada and abroad attend the festival to perform readings, interviews and panel discussions. The organization also runs the Incite reading series in the spring and the Spreading the Word schools program year-round. In years past Margaret Atwood (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Michael Ondaatje (“The English Patient”), J.K. Rowling (the “Harry Potter” series), Mordecai Richler (the “Jacob Two-Two” series for children) and Yann Martel (“Life of Pi”) just to name a few have attended these events. The Vancouver Writers Festival is committed to providing a full day of Festival events to the public absolutely free of charge. In doing so, we honour our commitment to principles of inclusion, equity and access.
We know that the conversations which happen on our Festival stages are everything from intriguing to life-changing. There is a “Free Saturday” initiative which helps to ensure that as many members of our Vancouver community as possible can engage with these ideas and the possibilities they spark.
