The Vancouver International Film Festival returns once again to Vancity and my oh my are we in for a treat this year! Our very own Sunsetter Arabella Bushnell will be featuring in her latest film which was written and directed by her husband Kris Elgstrand.

Carol (Arabella Bushnell) is a quiet thirty something office worker, desperately trying to find a way to express herself, and her feelings. To overcome her difficulty of opening up, she tries to take a music therapy course that encourages people to sing what they feel, so it seems like they’re not actually saying it. This winds up getting Carol in trouble, as she begins leaving singing messages on peoples answering machines, including a song for her boss called Asshole Dave. Instead of firing her, Dave (Brad Dryborough) finds himself inspired to get back into music, and drags Carol along for the ride.

Written and directed by Kris Elgstrand, Songs She Wrote About People She Knows is an hilarious journey from boardroom to recording studio. Beneath all the comedy, there’s also a fantastic message about honesty and expressing yourself, and how it may affect those around you in ways you might not expect.

Arabella Bushnell is fantastic as Carol, the timid office worker who finally finds a way to express herself. Watching her character come out of her shell is just perfect, and will feel familiar to anybody who may have struggled with being shy. She’s creative, smart and beautiful, and is only held back by herself. While Bushnell is incredible in her role, Brad Dryborough is even one step further as Dave. He’s constantly bouncing off the walls, filled with more enthusiasm than talent, and becomes a guiding force to help Carol break free.

Is Songs She Wrote About People She Knows essential festival viewing?
Definitely check this one out. It’s very fun and light, with a dark little twist each time Carol sings another song, but it’s also got such a great message about being honest with those around you.
