MLS Soccer is in full swing and the season is underway.
One of and if not the fiercest rivalry in MLS soccer between the Vancouver Whitecaps versus our neighbours to the south on the I-5 (Interstate Highway 5), the Seattle Sounders will be going head-to-head on Saturday March 30th, 2019 at BC Place. These two teams have been battling it out on the field since 1974.
The NASL (North American Soccer League) was already becoming popular in Washington State as well as in Vancouver as a new and upcoming team known as the Seattle Sounders were ready to take on our beloved Whitecaps. What has become an even more exciting sport, the world’s most popular game was ready to tackle the Pacific Northwest with this rivalry that is like no other.
Did you know that in 2004, the Cascadia Cup was an award given to one of the teams that are based in our geographic area where the Portland Timbers, Seattle Sounders and Whitecaps would all compete against one another for also the top team in the Pacific Northwest. Fans of all three Cascadian teams agreed to make only the last home and last away matches between constituent clubs count towards the Cup. Our Whitecaps have dominated the Cascadia Cup series by winning six matches and again, our rivals, the Sounders are in a close second with having won five matches. These wins are combined totals from both the USL (United Soccer League) and MLS (Major League Soccer) combined. In the current MLS era, both the Whitecaps and Sounders have three wins a piece where Portland has two.
Make sure to mark Saturday March 30th on your calendars as the Sounders and Whitecaps kick off against each other at BC Place. The match starts and kickoff is at 7pm. Ready for some exciting end-to-end action? C’mon over to Vancouver and cheer on the Whitecaps as we hope to take over soccer supremacy in the Pacific Northwest!
