The history of the Sunset Inn and Suites located at 1111 Burnaby Street in the heart of Vancouver’s West End and Davie Village neighbourhoods has a story to tell you. Have you ever wondered how we came to be? What started it all? Why are we here? If those are some of your questions, let us tell you more about our wonderful little hotel.
In 1972, our history began, we started off as the Centennial Lodge Apartment Motel located next door at 1123 and 1131 Burnaby Street. We slowly progressed to purchase the then Las Palmas Apartments in 1975 which is the site we are currently located on. By 1985 and just before Expo 86, we changed our name to Sunset Inn Travel Apartments. This was due to a bit of confusion of another Centennial Lodge in both Vancouver and New Westminster. As the years progressed, we worked on various renovations throughout the hotel starting with our lobby through 1987 and other parts of the building until 1998. In 1998, the Mamdani family bought our hotel. As of 2000, history changed again, we officially became the Sunset Inn and Suites.
Our guests tell us they were first drawn to Sunset Inn and Suites because of our attractive, spacious suites and terrific location, but they return time and again because of our people and staff. We are all practically like “family” to each other and to our guests.
We have always been an independent and family-owned and operated hotel. This has allowed us to stay away from the cookie-cutter style and anonymity of hotels run by large franchise companies. It also enables us to respond to our guests’ needs quickly and more efficiently, without having to run everything by a remote corporate headquarters. In fact, our company policy and procedures manual contains only one statement: “Treat each other and each of our guests as we would a member of our family.” We take pride in our dedication to helping every guest enjoy their stay with us and their visit to Vancouver.
Our building has its origins as an apartment building – The Las Palmas Tower. This may explain why we offer the largest suites in Vancouver, with fully equipped kitchens and private balconies. Our suites were built to house couples and families for stays of several years. We are just completing a $3-million dollar renovation, with every surface and furnishing throughout the hotel brand new (and in many cases, custom-designed) to better serve and delight our guests. But we’re not stopping there. We are fully committed to continue improving our hotel and services and to remain a step ahead in anticipating our guests’ needs. We stand behind our work and what we do.
