Family-Friendly Christmas Activities in Vancouver

This holiday season, there are plenty of family-friendly activities that you and your family can enjoy together in Vancouver. There’s practically something each day leading up to Christmas! We’ve rounded up a list of the best markets, light shows, and festivals for you to visit this Christmas in Vancouver.

Experience Canyon Lights at Capilano Suspension Bridge

In previous blogs, we’ve mentioned the Capilano Suspension Bridge, a must-see attraction in Vancouver. What’s great about visiting in December though is that you’ll get to experience the Canyon Lights, where the park is transformed with changing multi-colored light displays.

Open from 11 am to 9 pm each day from Nov. 19 through Jan. 22, you can still enjoy all of the attractions that you normally would when visiting the park. Cross the bridge while taking in gorgeous views of the Capilano River, explore one of the seven bridges part of the Treetops Adventure, and walk your way through the light tunnel near a portion of the Cliffwalk.

You’ll definitely want to purchase your ticket in advance. Buy your ticket and find more information on their website below.

Go Ice Skating at the Shipyards

What’s a better Christmas outdoor activity than figure skating? This December, head to the Shipyard Commons outdoor skate plaza to skate on the largest outdoor skating rink in the region. The views from the rink are amazing, as you can glance downtown Vancouver along with the mountains. The rink is open daily and offers skate rentals (with free helmets and skate aides for those that need them!) Those with skates can skate for free!

Go Skiing or Snowboarding at Whistler-Blackcomb

For those that want to go a bit more extreme, skiers and snowboarders can take a day trip up to Whistler. It’s located two hours from downtown Vancouver and Sunset Inn, but the drive is definitely worth it – Whistler is known as being one of the best ski destinations on the continent!

There are two mountains here – Whistler and Blackcomb – that can keep you busy and in the snow for up to a week if you decide to extend your trip. The Whistler Blackcomb ski resort is actually the largest in North America!

Not much of a powder head? There’s still plenty to do at Whistler for you to enjoy. There’s a cute city with plenty of shopping, spas, and arts and culture to enjoy in the village.

Check out the Vancouver Christmas Market

Perhaps one of the most beloved winter festivals in Vancouver is the Vancouver Christmas Market, a market that brings Old World tradition to the city. It’s here that you’ll enjoy yummy food, German drinks, and sweet treats. It’s located in Jack Poole Plaza, just a quick drive away from Sunset Inn & Suites.

Although it opened in November for the season, there’s still plenty of time for you and your family to plan a visit here as it’s open until December 24!

Attractions at the Vancouver Christmas Market include a European-inspired Christmas village, a carousel, live music, and a scavenger hunt! You’re also sure to find gifts for everyone on your list this year at one of the 80 huts selling handcrafted gifts. And for the adults, make sure you check out some German or Austrian beer or some mulled wine – yum!

Whatever you and your family decide to do as part of your trip to Vancouver this December, we at Sunset Inn & Suites wish you a very merry and safe holiday season!
