Vancouver is a great city at any time of year, but especially so when autumn leaves start to turn. Whether you like looking at the fall foliage, watching movies, getting spooked at Halloween, or just exploring the city, Vancouver in October offers a wealth of fun things to do. Here are 5 of them.
1. Explore Forbidden Vancouver – On Foot
Since October is such a beautiful month to walk the city, consider taking a walking tour of Forbidden Vancouver. These tours, led by local actors and tour guides, take you behind the scenes as you walk through the Vancouver’s secret history.
There are five walking tours to choose from, some of which originate near Sunset Inn & Suites. You’ll walk at a comfortable pace for a few hours, stopping to explore interesting locations from Vancouver’s secret past.
2. Stroll or Hike Through Stanley Park
October is also a beautiful month to take a stroll or a longer hike through scenic Stanley Park. You’ll see all the fall colours, along with the park’s normal breathtaking wooded and ocean views. Make sure you take your camera or fire up the camera on your mobile phone – this is a once-a-year photo opportunity. Most of the park’s attractions are open throughout the month, so you can spend an hour or a whole day there.
3. Ride the Stanley Park Ghost Train
Speaking of Stanley Park, it’s the perfect place to celebrate Halloween – all October long. This is when the Stanley Park Railway becomes the Stanley Park Ghost Train. The entire railway, including the famous miniature train, is decorated in a special Halloween theme every year. This year’s theme is Alice in Nightmareland, and live performers help tell the story and enhance the spookiness.
The Ghost Train runs every evening in the dark, but if you think that’s too scary for your little ones, check out the special Little Monsters Matinee. This is a less-scary ride, with no live performers, that runs during the day.
4. Get Spooked at Fright Nights
If you crave even scarier Halloween frights, check out the annual Fright Nights attraction at the Playland amusement park. Fright Nights augments all your favourite rides with seven haunted mansions and numerous live performances, including The Bloodshed, Car-N-Evil, Hollywood Horrors, The Monsters of Schlock, and The Freaks. To get there, take Hastings Street east from downtown to the Pacific National Exhibition.
5. Catch a Film at the Vancouver International Film Festival
Forget Halloween, October is the best month of the year for Vancouver’s film buffs. The Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) runs through October 11 at the Vancity Theatre, close to the Sunset Inn & Suites.
VIFF is one of the five largest film festivals in North America. It draws more than 140,000 fans to enjoy 380 movies from 70 countries. As the name implies, the focus is on culturally diverse films from around the world.
