Honda – Celebration of Light 2013 Important Information.

Friday, May 17th, 2013

By far one of the biggest events of the Summer calender is the Celebration of light Fireworks.

We will like to give you some helpful tips and advice for the 3 days on the days that the Fireworks will be occurring as there will be road closures. We will also give you some pointers on where is best to watch the show.

CHECKING IN TIME/PARKING ADVICE
As we are in high season it is highly likely that the rooms will be ready closer to the usual check in time of 4pm, we know that some of you are travelling early – so if the room is not ready, don’t worry, we will have plenty of space to store any bulky luggage, and you will be able to park your car at anytime, irrespective of the status of the room.

Bring your vehicle to the very front of the hotel, we have a loading zone for your convenience that has enough space for 2 vehicles – when you check in, park the vehicle in this spot (make sure there is enough room for a second vehicle) and we will then direct you with a parking pass to the parking lot.

ROAD CLOSURES
Due to the volume of people that will be attending the display (300,000 and more) The city will be shutting down the West End to traffic for safety precautions.

ROAD CLOSURES COME INTO AFFECT AT 19.30hrs (7pm)

We do advise that you try to check into the hotel before the streets close at 7.30pm, as the Police will not let anyone in without a West End permit (Our Green Parking passes are not accepted as Permits). The Sunset Inn is just within the closed boundary.

Please see the link to see a map of the Road closures. http://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/28412201/MAP2012.pdf

THE BEST VIEWING/VANTAGE POINTS
The majority of the crowds will be heading down toward the intersections of Davie and and Denman Street – also a big crowd will assemble at Beach and Pacific Ave.

English Bay is the most popular area, however, it will be seriously crowded and you will likely be packed tighter than a can of sardines. We suggest that you head down Thurlow Street towards the Sea-Wall and head West towards English Bay and the Inukshuk.

Sunset Beach is a really good vantage point and will be much quieter and less congestion. DO NOT BRING BOOZE, it will be confiscated and you are at risk of a fine. Be smart regarding valuables – as always when there are large crowds it is best to be safe and sound.

Davie Village and The West End Gay District.

Wednesday, April 24th, 2013

The Sunset Inn and Suites is located in the gorgeous West End Community of Vancouver – this area fills the void between the Downtown core of the city and Stanley Park.

Our location is situated in an area called Davie Village which is in the heart of the Vancouver Gay District of Vancouver. The Village spans over 3 blocks along Davie St beginning from the Eastern Side at Burrard St and ending around Jervis Street to the West.

In 1999 The Davie Street Business Association decided to phrase the area as ‘Davie Village’ and in the process they decided to give the neighbourhoood an uplift by installing colourful Rainbow flags (the official symbolic flag for Gay Pride)on one side of the post, with the other side showing artwork from a local artist called ‘Joe Average’.

We will like to highlight the very best of the Davie Village area so you know where to go for good food and entertainment right on your door step.

Local restaurants that are taking part in Dine Out and are in close proximity to the Sunset are as follows.

Celebration of lights fireworks begins on Saturday July 28th!!!

Wednesday, July 25th, 2012

The Sunset Inn hotel is getting ready for the official start of major festivities in Vancouver.

Starting this Saturday July 28th, the first of 3 huge fireworks displays will be occurring at English Bay as part of the annual Celebration of Light Fireworks competition.

This is an event that is by far one of the most popular in Vancouver, and for all those who live in the West End we see this as the true beginning of summer.

Please see the link below to know what to expect…

http://hondacelebrationoflight.com/

This is a major event in the city, and with any huge event such as this you will have to expect road closures, so, we do strongly suggest that if you do have a vehicle this will be the best day to leave it at the hotel, the West End completely shuts down for traffic at around 4pm, so the streets can let around half a million people migrate through the West End towards English Bay.

We always suggest that you head straight down to the Beach via the seawall on Thurlow Street to Sunset Beach and towards English Bay…..you do not have to be right at the Bay to see the display, it will be crazy full and if anything Sunset Beach will be quieter yet – still it has an amazing vantage point, also GO EARLY….there will be a stage and live bands to entertain you as the sun sets before the big show shoots into the sky at 10pm…be prepared to be dazzled!!!!

As for the rest of the summer, please keep checking this blog for further exciting events. Over the next couple of months the Vancouver Calender does get pretty busy, the events following the fireworks are as follows…….The Davie Street Dance Party on August 3rd.

http://www.coopradio.org/events/barefoot-davie-street-dance-party

Following hot on its heels is the Annual Pride Festival and parade, then all this ends with a bang with the Vancouver Fringe Festival during September…….summer has never been so good in Vancity!!!

http://www.vancouverpride.ca/

Also in 2009 during the South African display at the celebration of light, a very rare thunderstorm moved over the city and very nearly upstaged the event itself, I believe the footage will speak for itself…..the 1st is a timelapse of the day, pretty breathtaking, the second video is the full display itself…enjoy!

Folk Festival at Deep Cove

Tuesday, July 10th, 2012

Deep Cove is by far one of the best kept secrets of the Vancouver North shore area. The small village is literally built alongside a natural Cove nestled within the mouth of Indian Arm.

Indian Arm is gorgeous for sightseeing as it is nestled between Grouse mountain and Mount Seymour. Deep Cove is famous for being one of the homes of Dragon Boat racing, regular boating and yachting, its also an extremely popular destination for anyone who wants to go Kayaking. Wether you are experienced or not, this is the place to go on these long hot summer days that have finally arrived to greet us.

http://www.deepcovekayak.com/

Not only that, but Deep Cove will be holding its annual North Shore Folkfest. Now in its 38th year, that are plenty of musicians to be entertained by on the evenings of Saturday June 16th and Sunday June 17th.

http://www.deepcovebc.com

So here is a suggestion on how you can make a full fun packed day with your loved ones. Deep Cove and the North Shore are easily accessible from The Sunset Inn and Suites either by Public Transport or your own vehicle. And if you are unsure – do not hesitate to ask the staff at the front desk for information and directions, we will make sure you know how to get there.

On the way to the North Shore, take a quick detour around Stanley Park, whilst you are doing the loop, make sure you visit the Stanley Park Totem Poles, have time to spend a couple of hours at the Vancouver Aquarium, then onto Prospect Point for a breathtaking view of the city, English Bay, Bowen Island, Lionsgate Bridge and The North Shore Mountains. Once this has been achieved, you are now ready to move over the Lionsgate Bridge towards North Vancouver and onto Lynn Canyon then Deep Cove.

Lynn Canyon is located very close to Deep Cove and will be the next destination after Stanley Park. The Canyon boasts a smaller wooden Suspension Bridge in comparison to Capilano Suspension Bridge (Lynn Canyon is truly the spot the majority of locals will tend to go too), The Lynn Canyon Cafe which is home to an ecological centre that educates you on the local Flora, Fauna and ecology of the Canyon a few yards away. There are also some excellent hiking trails that follow the river from the Grouse Mountain, we highly recommend that you explore the trails.

From Lynn Canyon you can then make your way east towards Deep Cove, here there are more trails to explore, the cute village, and gorgeous beach that is part of this natural cove….here you will be able to sign up and go Kayaking for an hour or more. After you have enjoyed the dip…..evening time should soon be upon you, now you can sit back and enjoy the music from the FolkFest.

Get a good dose of the Sunshine coast into your system….

Tuesday, June 5th, 2012

One of the most convenient perks that the Sunset Inn and Suites offers is the option of free parking of a single vehicle per room. Now as much as driving around the city of Vancouver can be a little challenging at times, it does give you great freedom to explore the local districts of North and West Vancouver and beyond in very little time, and this we wholeheartedly encourage!!!

As the weather is about to turn the corner to clear skies and plenty of warm sunshine, this will be a good time to show off an area called ‘The Sunshine Coast’.

One of our favorite places to visit is the beautiful and tranquil Bowen Island.

Looking out west from English Bay you can see Bowen Island out in the distance, it looks like a large hilly peninsula that melts away to the ocean, at the height of summer you will get to witness some stunning sunsets as it falls behind the peak of Mount Gardner on the island
.
The island is truly beautiful, situated in the middle of Howe Sound it is known to some as the gateway to the Sunshine Coast. The small town of Gibsons is located a little further West where you hop across via the ferry.

The attraction and appeal of Bowen are the artisan shops, the gentler speed of life, the local ecology and the breathtaking scenery…..it is certainly a place to be if you really appreciate the great outdoors and an easy going pace of life.

To reach Bowen is pretty easy, and why not make a whole day of it? A good full day out will be to drive to Lighthouse Park in West Vancouver, hop across to Horseshoe Bay where you can take the vehicle onto the Bowen Island Ferry, dropping you off at idyllic Snug Cove. It is just a short 20 minute journey across the Howe Sound, oh and please have the camara handy, the backdrop of the steep mountains and natural Fjord is truly stunning.
The ferry will drop you off at Snug Cove and you will find yourself right by the small village, here there are some very good restaurants, a pub and artisan shops to visit, plus the local Tourist Information office is here too.

So check it out, you will have a blast!!!!

Tents set up for Bard on the Beach

May 31st is the official opening of Bard on the Beach….a popular annual favorite that has been entertaining the masses since 1990.

The location of Bard on the Beach is quite convenient as it is situated at Vanier Park on the opposing side of False creek to us at the Sunset Inn. Just a 10 minute walk down the hill to the Seawall, you will be able to catch the cute False Creek Ferry taxi over to the Maritime Museam at Vanier Park. $3.25 one way and a round trip at $5.50 Cash Only!

The location for these great Shakespearean open air plays is pretty stunning, you have some wonderful views of English Bay and the City Skyline, definitely a photogenic moment that captures the city, mountains and rolling ocean.

Bard on the Beach runs from May 31st all the way through to September 22nd, so that is plenty of time to get your tickets for one of your favorite shows.

The performances for the 2012 season are as follows….

THE TAMING OF THE SHREW

The ultimate battle of the sexes! Fiery, hot-tempered Kate faces off in a crackling battle of wits with the only man who can tame her.

MACBETH

Seductive prophecy and devastating ambition are the forces that drive this dark and powerful tragedy.

THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR

It’s 1968 and the merry wives of Windsor, Ontario plot their hilarious revenge on the wickedly charming rogue Sir John Falstaff.

KING JOHN

King John plots to stay one move ahead in this game of high-stakes chess where the winner takes the crown.

And whilst you are down there, head round the corner to kitsilano and kits Beach , this is truly our little taste of California….nearby there are some very good bars and restaurants to choose from, and if you are up for a challenge…climb the steep hill up towards West 4th Avenue. This area which is very much like The West End – is a popular spot for some shopping, drinking and eating.

Come on down to the Night market and other attractions at Vancouver Chinatown.

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012

The Chinese have a long history with Canada and Vancouver especially around 1880 and 1920 where thousands of Chinese immigrants made their way to Canada, they were to settle in this area of the city, where it was commonly known as either Shanghai Alley or Cantonese Alley, much of the area was built around a 500 seat Theatre that was built by the Chinese in 1898, and from there the town grew and Flourished.

The town went into decline and disrepair during the 1980s, partly due to the Cantonese population moving elsewhere within the Vancouver metropolis, however, since 1986 and the Expo event the town became revitalised. Nowadays, the Town is undergoing some major changes, upgrading and economical boost, in part due to wealthier peoples from Asia and specifically Hong Kong, setting up business and real estate. This has created a boom in more modern upscale restaurants and homes within the neighbourhood.

What attractions you should see in Chinatown?
Dr Sun Yat Sen Classical Chinese Gardens
Chinese Cultural Centre Museam and Archives
China Gate
Chinese Night Market
The Chinese Night Market officially opens on May 17th. This has to be one of the highlights of the summer season in Vancouver, and definitely a must go see attraction. There are plenty of vibrant and colourful stalls with excellent food , and plenty of items such as clothing, crockery and jeweler for sale, all at a fantastic price too!!!

Chinatown can be easily reached via bus, foot or Cab, the Number 6 bus will take you very close to the area, or a Cab ride itself will cost around $15, if you are feeling energetic – walking there will take around 45 minutes from The Sunset Inn.
