About the film.
Carol, an emotionally bottled up woman, discovers the pitfalls of honest self-expression when she begins writing and singing songs she wrote about people she knows. Her songs immediately alienate her friends and co-workers with one notable exception: her boss Dave, to whom she dedicates the song Asshole Dave. Inspired by the song, Dave fires Carol with a nifty severance so she can pursue her music. Dave, in turn, quits his job, and picks up a guitar in an attempt to revive his long-abandoned dream of becoming a rock star. But Dave’s resolve is challenged when he finds himself in a hotel room in California without his medication. The two misfits soon find themselves working with a strange record producer, Silent G (nee Doug), whose work inspires Carol to confront her biggest emotional obstacle: her mother. Unable to find satisfaction, Carol pours her entire severance package into producing a full album that she shares with her “friends” at a special LP release party.

The film is featuring in the Vancouver International Film Festival which is running until OCTOBER 9th 2015

Vancouver International Film Festival featuring our very own Arabella Bushnell

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2014

The Vancouver International Film Festival returns once again to Vancity and my oh my are we in for a treat this year! Our very own Sunsetter Arabella Bushnell will be featuring in her latest film which was written and directed by her husband Kris Elgstrand.

Here is the official write up of the ‘Songs she wrote about people she knows’ courtesy of #VIFF
Carol (Arabella Bushnell) is a quiet thirty something office worker, desperately trying to find a way to express herself, and her feelings. To overcome her difficulty of opening up, she tries to take a music therapy course that encourages people to sing what they feel, so it seems like they’re not actually saying it. This winds up getting Carol in trouble, as she begins leaving singing messages on peoples answering machines, including a song for her boss called Asshole Dave. Instead of firing her, Dave (Brad Dryborough) finds himself inspired to get back into music, and drags Carol along for the ride.

Written and directed by Kris Elgstrand, Songs She Wrote About People She Knows is an hilarious journey from boardroom to recording studio. Beneath all the comedy, there’s also a fantastic message about honesty and expressing yourself, and how it may affect those around you in ways you might not expect.

Arabella Bushnell is fantastic as Carol, the timid office worker who finally finds a way to express herself. Watching her character come out of her shell is just perfect, and will feel familiar to anybody who may have struggled with being shy. She’s creative, smart and beautiful, and is only held back by herself. While Bushnell is incredible in her role, Brad Dryborough is even one step further as Dave. He’s constantly bouncing off the walls, filled with more enthusiasm than talent, and becomes a guiding force to help Carol break free.

Is Songs She Wrote About People She Knows essential festival viewing?
Definitely check this one out. It’s very fun and light, with a dark little twist each time Carol sings another song, but it’s also got such a great message about being honest with those around you.

Here is a video trailer of the film.

PuSh Festival @Granville Island…1 more week left

Monday, January 28th, 2013

If you are visiting Vancouver this week be sure to visit Granville Island as the PuSh Festival is in its final week (ending on February 3rd).

This is the first major festival of the season and a very good excuse to check out what Granville Island has to offer – and it does offer a lot. From the famous Granville Island market, to artisan bakeries, stylish boutique shops. There is also no shortage of entertainment for all the family, the famous Granville Island Buskers which are a staple for entertainment and they are really really good, you will be very entertained.

For further reading and more in depth information on Granville Island…please take a look at this older blog entry…it should help navigate you as to what is on offer there…

The Island is also a good spot for dining, you have plenty to choose from most notably The Sandbar which boasts a great balcony area where you can enjoy your meal with an excellent view…and check out Edible Canada too, they have a sweet location right in the hub of Granville Island…perfect to watch the people and the day go by…to reach Granville Island is very easy, roughly a 20 minute journey, you head down Thurlow St and catch the False Creek Ferry, its easy, its cute and its cash only! Ask the Front desk at the Sunset Inn & Suites for further details there…

We want to highlight this particular show as it involves Kris Elgstrand who is the husband of our very own Sunset Inn Front desk extraordinaire Arabella Bushnell!!!

The show is a pretty quirky melancholy take on living in Vancouver, it explores the city via the medium of drawings, writings, thoughts and libertations, it was conceived during Vancouver’s darkest and dreary months of fall and winter…hence the title of Sad Sack.

If you like to look at further works from Kris Elgstrand, be sure to check out his own show call ‘Social Anxiety Hour’ which also features our very own Arabella!!! so please come out and support these guys – you will not be disappointed.
